I’ve found it very useful actually. It takes a bit of time to master, I'd say it is probably a little more difficult to use than a standard ophthalmoscope but I think it is just a process of getting used to it. I certainly think it has lots of potential. In the hospital I'm working in there are no standard ophthalmoscopes on the general wards or general outpatients despite a huge burden of need in the form of HIV associated CNS infections and uncontrolled diabetes.’

“Going into the session, we had [an] Ophthalmologist who had never heard of the Optyse. Although they use more specialized equipment, they understand that as primary care physicians many of us will be using the direct ophthalmoscopes, and if we find anything out of the ordinary... we will be referring our patients to them.  He seemed at first sceptical about the size of the scope, its ability to be used with glasses (since he was wearing some), and a little concerned that it didn't have any coloured filter. When he tried it out, he was pleasantly surprised and really liked it. Every individual in our small group had an Optyse to use from our order and we all found everything we were looking for very successfully. So none of us had any complaints. Some of our group were using glasses, and the Optyse worked brilliantly. I personally also liked its portability in that it can easily be stuck in the pocket of my white coat with pens.”
